If you're a seasoned birder, you certainly don't need a guide - though he/she will enrich your experience with loads of information. There are so few species on Ulva; it's not like being in the tropics where 500 species are possible at a single reserve! I only saw @20 species on Ulva in 3 hours. Only bird I missed was Yellow-crowned Parakeet. I suspect you'll find 95% of the species in 3-4 hours, so I don't think you need a full day. Island is small.

2) Scout for roads with grassy/weedy margins when it's light and walk the best looking areas after dark, maybe from 9pm to midnight.

3) See #1. Full day on Ulva is more than enough. You will have time for pelagic if you want to do it.

If you have social media and have birding friends, I'd really appreciate you sharing a link to this blog with your network. The more people that know about this resource the better! I have nearly 1 and half days in hand for birding. - Would you recommend self birding or taking up a guided tour?
2. For the Kiwi, I am planning something similar to what you mentioned - first night will try myself for the sighting the bird if it fails, I can sign up for one the night kiwi walks by Ruggedy or Ulva's
3. I am not planning on Pelagics - so a full day a birding in Ulva can get me nearly all targets right?Gautam Krishnanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13665380494267112150noreply@blogger.com
